Glint and Zale share a quiet meal beneath the roots.
Zale let three easy jokes pass without catching any of them. 🌿

They divided the five weed tips beneath the second root while the water beyond the scar dimmed. Nobody called it a meal. Hunger made even the drifting crumbs seem important. Finley still guarded his portion from drifting silt with great seriousness.
Usually Zale would have noticed.
TurboTAD watched him turn one thin stem between his flippers until its torn end came apart.
“You don’t have to make this lighter,” TurboTAD said.
“Good,” Zale replied. “I’m doing a terrible job.”
The smile arrived and left. He looked across the pocket at Glint.
“When we go in, if I joke instead of answering properly, stop me.”
Glint blinked once. “I already stop you.”
“You correct me. I mean stop me.”
“Define the difference.”
Zale’s breath almost became a laugh. “If I’m annoying, correct me. If I’m hiding that I’m scared, stop me.”
The little pocket went quiet.
Finley forgot to guard his food. Vael watched Zale without pretending not to.
Glint placed his own weed tip down. “I can do that.”
“Even in front of everyone?”
“Especially then. Fewer witnesses to the second mistake.”
That earned the laugh Zale had not managed for himself.
He lifted the final shared leaf. “A feast fit for—”
“Stop,” Glint said.
Zale met his eyes. Then he split the leaf between them and allowed the silence to stay.
