Their supper crossed the last known-safe line before any swimmer did. 🍃

WHAT THE GRASS KEPT 🌿
The hurried loop opened beneath a returning thread of water. Their bundle of tender weed tips rolled from the shelter root and drifted past the old scar.
Zale kicked after it.
Finley caught his flipper. “You are not worth five leaves.”
“There were twelve.”
“My valuation stands.”
The bundle snagged against a broken stem just beyond the place where the guide had turned back. Close enough to count every leaf. Too far to reach without entering water none of them had claimed was safe.
TurboTAD found a long shed reed under the shelter. He anchored its base while Zale guided the tip. Glint watched the small movements carrying through the grass, and Vael held Finley’s chart clear of the work.
The reed hooked the bundle.
For one breath, supper came home.
Then the broken stem caught its middle. The bundle split, scattering green pieces into the right-hand grass. Zale could have reached the nearest ones with a single stroke.
His tail tightened.
He drew the reed back.
Five damp weed tips remained wound around its end.
By then the green light between the roots had thinned. Vael looked towards the approach and shook his head. No one argued.
Finley counted their supper. “I withdraw my complaint about the portion sizes.”
Vael returned Finley’s chart.
They carried the five pieces into the resting pocket. Beyond the scarred root, the broken grass slowly swallowed the rest.
