Vael pressed Finley’s rolled chart beneath the sheltering root. 🗺️

THE ONE WHO STAYED AT THE LINE 🌊
The scarred root lay across the water ahead. Beyond it, pressed grass leaned towards a bend no traveller had claimed to understand.
Finley held the marked strip close. “I need you inside. What if the route divides?”
“Then you will know less than you prefer,” Vael said. “The chart cannot watch this water change behind you.”
TurboTAD checked the distance to the first turn. Vael’s call would reach them there. Past the second, perhaps not.
“Is staying still your choice?” he asked.
Vael looked from the chart to the altered reeds. “It is.”
Finley had already practised placing the chart beyond reach. This was different. Vael would keep it while he swam where its lines could no longer answer him.
Finley gave him the roll.
“If you call,” he said, “I return.”
“Even if you dislike my reason?”
Finley’s mouth tightened. “Especially then.”
Vael secured the chart beneath the root. The disagreement in his face stayed with him.
Zale tied a double loop around the homeward rib. He crossed, turned in the unfamiliar water and checked it once.
“Home.”
TurboTAD joined him. Glint followed, then Finley with the marked strip covered against his side.
The water beyond felt almost ordinary. A snail no wider than TurboTAD’s eye kept polishing a torn stem.
Behind them, Vael remained beside the chart. Ahead, the grass closed around the first bend.
