The place they sought looked, at first, like a root that had given up. 🌳

THE ROOTS THAT KEPT RECORDS 🍂
It lay folded against the clay bank, grey fibres buried beneath a younger tangle. No doorway showed. No record edge caught the light. A cloud of water fleas grazed peacefully above it, as if nothing important had ever happened there.
Finley unrolled his chart and aligned the old junctions. “The record place belongs here.”
“The chart’s missing road also belongs somewhere,” Zale said. “It has not been wonderfully helpful about that.”
“A fair complaint,” Finley replied, which silenced him more effectively than an argument.
Vael moved along the bank without touching it. Two fine living roots curved apart at the grey mass, then joined again beyond it.
“They grew around something harder than clay,” Vael said. “The weight is carried on the right.”
Finley rolled the chart close and came nearer. Three thick ribs met beneath the younger growth, spaced like the junctions he knew.
“A root archive,” he said softly. “Collapsed inward.”
TurboTAD had expected carved walls, perhaps, or an entrance worthy of all Finley’s careful lines. Instead, the Pond had folded its past small and grown green life over the wound.
Glint hovered beside a narrow seam where clean water passed through. “Possible access. Unstable edges.”
Finley studied the buried ribs. Vael watched the living ones strain around them. Neither moved first.
TurboTAD stopped beside the seam, close enough to feel its faint breath against his face.
“We found it,” he said. “Now we find out whether it will let us in.”
