THE ROOT BENEATH THE CASES 🌿

The narrow approach divided beneath a curtain of water-starwort. Its right-hand tips leaned with a clean current.

“Right,” Vael said.

Finley held his chart against the flow. “The old junction spacing continues forward.”

TurboTAD chose the living sign. They followed Vael through the right gap—and curved back to the same curtain from below.

Zale stared at the caddis cases inching over the root. “Did the tiny builders move, or did we?”

“We did,” Glint said.

The wrong turn had cost a stripe of daylight. Vael touched the starwort, displeased. “The water uses this loop now.”

“The archive did not,” Finley said.

He pointed between three old root ribs almost hidden by the crawling cases. Their spacing matched the three bends on his chart. Beyond the third, a pale seam disappeared under fine weed.

TurboTAD hesitated. The gap looked closed.

Finley swam to it anyway.

As his shadow crossed the root, the caddis larvae carried their stone cases towards brighter water. Their slow procession uncovered a grey rib beneath the weed.

Finley followed its direction with his gaze. “The junction is under us.”

Vael pressed the exposed rib, then looked back at the looping current.

“Your spacing held,” he said.

Finley’s satisfaction was quiet and complete. “Please remember the occasion accurately.”

The caddis cases trundled on. Beneath them, the grey root led towards a folded mass against the clay bank.
