Finley studies an unrolled chart over a sunlit submerged log, with a round root passage behind him.

Finley opened his chart before anyone could answer him. 🗺️

The water caught one corner of the chart. The basket woman steadied it against a broad root while Glint held the opposite edge.

“Show me the bed’s direction,” Finley said.

TurboTAD pointed beyond the displaced marker. Zale nudged his flipper a fraction farther outward.

Finley rotated the chart once, then again. Its familiar lanes gathered in careful lines, but the place beneath TurboTAD’s flipper held nothing at all.

One guard leaned closer. “Your road isn’t there.”

“That is the trouble with it,” Finley said.

Zale peered over the root. “You sound offended.”

“I drew this copy. I am allowed to be offended.”

Glint studied the empty patch. “Blank is not the same as false.”

“Nor is it proof of a road,” Finley replied. He looked at TurboTAD. “Your evidence can correct my chart. It cannot tell us what belongs in every empty space.”

TurboTAD had expected a mapmaker to defend the map. Finley pressed one flipper over the blank as if taking responsibility for it.

“Can it still help?” TurboTAD asked.

“It can hold a direction.” Finley aligned the chart’s edge with the lane and the bearing they had described. The line ran toward a narrow corridor of dark roots. “And it can tell us what that direction leaves behind.”

The basket woman released the chart, then pulled her split-reed basket from beneath the root.

“I carried the facts,” she said. “You carry the blank.”

Finley rolled the chart carefully. “I intend to.”
