THE WAY WATER ONCE WENT 🌿

Finley kept his chart rolled as the corridor narrowed. Behind them, the guards and basket woman remained beside the displaced marker.

At the first fork, every drifting husk swept towards the inhabited shallows. The deeper branch was quieter. Old roots along its floor were worn smooth in a broad band leading outward.

Glint touched neither branch. “Current inward. Wear outward.”

Finley crossed the fork twice, feeling both movements against his flippers. His expression changed.

“The old river carried water away from the shallows. Today’s flow brings it back.”

TurboTAD watched another husk vanish towards home. “Enough to change your chart?”

“Enough to change what it claims we observed.”

“Before you see the older record?”

Finley met his gaze. “The record may explain this. It does not get to erase it.”

He opened the chart in the cramped water. A corner folded in the current; TurboTAD pressed it flat while Glint held the other. Finley drew a firm outward line for the worn bed and a lighter inward curve for the flow they felt now.

They returned to the corridor mouth. One guard leaned over the new marks.

“So the blank was wrong.”

“Incomplete. I still don’t know why.”

The basket woman touched the rolled edge. Finley carried the altered chart towards home, its fresh outward line still visible.
