ONLY WHAT THEY KNEW 🌊

The trio crossed the grass bowl and retraced the root gaps. Striped daylight widened over the cleared lane, two guards flanking the displaced marker.

The basket woman studied them. “You came back without the answer.”

“With part of it,” TurboTAD said.

One guard shifted across the marker. “Part of an answer cannot pull us from this lane.”

TurboTAD tucked his flippers closer; under that stare, every missing piece felt larger.

“I’m not asking it to,” TurboTAD said. “The old bed continued straight. Its current was forced around a pale stone shoulder. We don’t know what did it, or why.”

“Then what do you want carried?”

“I’m asking one swimmer to carry it inward and ask for someone who understands old routes. The guards stay.”

Zale faced the travellers. “And if the story grows teeth on the way, pull them out. We found no creature. No cause.”

“No guesses,” Glint said. “Those travel faster than facts.”

The basket woman slipped free and pushed her basket to the guard.

“Keep this. I’ll move faster.”

The guard caught it. “Certain?”

“No. But I know how to carry three facts.”

Glint moved into her path. “Only those three?”

“The guesses stay here.”

He let her pass.

She sped toward the inhabited Pond, empty-flippered. The guard tucked her basket beneath a root.

Striped daylight thinned before she returned with another swimmer.

One guard stared. “Finley?”

The Pond’s Mapmaker held a rolled chart close, studying TurboTAD.

“I’m told you found a road my maps forgot.”
