THE FIFTH BOWL 🍂

They spent the next day moving between the recess and the mineral teeth, watching full changes in the current.

Finley’s route copy remained rolled. His field strip grew crowded with crossed-out guesses and tiny sketches. Vael kept the branch positions on his own strip, large enough to read without putting his nose against them.

Vael returned from the evening report to Pip with fresh food. They folded bowls from curled leaves. Glint took his outside.

TurboTAD began to rise, but Finley had already picked up his own bowl.

“You’ll spill it at that angle,” he told Glint.

“I’m watching.”

Finley settled within the shelter’s edge, leaving him a clear view of the corridor. He held the curled lip of Glint’s bowl until it stayed where it belonged.

They ate without speaking for a while. Fading light left the pale stones visible after the weed had become dark.

“Do you ever get tired of being the last one?” Finley asked.

Glint scraped a soft piece from his bowl.

“Sometimes.”

Finley had expected a joke. He looked up.

“When we get home,” Glint said, “you can go back and fetch whatever I’ve forgotten.”

“What will you forget?”

“Something extremely inconvenient.”

Finley stayed until TurboTAD came to take the next watch. Then he carried both empty bowls inside, careful not to crush either one against the entrance.
