A grass cord moved where no swimmer could be seen. 🪲

HALF OF AN ANSWER 🌿
At the sheltered edge, a gatherer waited with two sweetroot bundles and a grass cord. The cord vanished around a root.
Two weed markers hung from its end: a single loop beside the left bundle, a double loop beside the right.
The gatherer spoke clearly toward the hidden water.
“The left sweetroot bundle is offered for my safe inward crossing beyond this root, marked by the single loop. The right bundle is offered for my safe return crossing to this same root, marked by the double loop.”
Nothing moved.
The offer was repeated exactly. TurboTAD felt his companions become still behind him.
The cord tightened.
Both bundles slid around the root. A moment later the cord returned.
The left bundle was gone. Its single-loop marker had been cut away with one clean nip. The right bundle and its double loop came back untouched.
The gatherer’s mouth hardened. “Only the inward crossing was accepted.”
“You still have payment for the return,” Finley said.
“And no agreement that anyone will take it.” The gatherer drew the cord close. “Half an answer is not a way home.”
Finley showed the copied mark and asked whether the fired-clay route plate bearing it had been seen beyond the root.
“No,” the gatherer said. “Wanting to help does not make me a witness.”
The gatherer left with the second bundle.
One unseen responder had understood the division and selected a single term. Whatever waited beyond the root had listened closely enough to choose.
