Finley left the map behind, then reached for it before he knew. 🪨

BEYOND HIS REACH 🧭
One safe root remained before the sheltered bargaining edge.
Vael stopped there. “We test without the chart.”
Finley drew the roll closer. “We need its relationships.”
“To reach the edge, yes,” Glint said. He held up the little reed-skin strip. “To identify the plate, no.”
The chart contained every dependable bend Finley understood, including the blank road that had wounded his pride. TurboTAD watched his grip tighten until the roll creaked.
Then Finley wedged it deep behind the root.
It stayed visible through the grass, close enough to recover, too far away for his flipper to clutch.
Zale covered the copied mark. “Identify what we seek.”
Finley did.
They swam the last safe curve without the chart. Vael led; Glint watched the open side; Zale kept Finley inside their line. Nothing went wrong. That was almost worse. Every ordinary bend proved the group could move while Finley’s map remained behind.
At the end of the curve, Finley reached toward the familiar weight at his side and found only water.
His flipper stayed there for a moment.
They returned for the chart. Finley retrieved it, but did not unroll it. He carried the covered strip in front as they crossed the final safe length.
Beyond the next root, a grass cord disappeared into hidden water. Two bundles of sweetroot waited beside it.
The live bargain had an edge, and they had reached it.
