The lower seam narrowed until their tails had to follow single-file. 🌑

WHERE VOICES THINNED 🌿
Vael led beside the living root, Finley’s chart held tight beneath one flipper. TurboTAD followed, then Finley, Zale and Glint.
The last blue daylight broke into threads above them. Fine fibres stroked TurboTAD’s back whenever the root flexed. He lifted a hanging strip for Finley and felt it drag across his flippers like cold weed. A tiny freshwater limpet clung beneath it, shut tight against every swimmer’s passing.
“Left after the split,” Finley said.
Vael paused without turning. “The living groove goes right.”
“The archive order—”
“Ended at an empty place.”
The words hung between them. Vael chose right.
Finley followed, but the disagreement came too.
Their own movement filled the seam. Zale’s tail brushed a loose fibre; silt opened behind him and swallowed the remaining daylight. Glint caught Zale’s shoulder before he could kick clear.
“Slow,” Glint said.
TurboTAD heard only part of it. The water had become strangely muffled, as though the root were holding their voices in its walls.
Ahead, the living groove ended at a black slit. Vael’s outstretched flipper disappeared into it.
“Cold,” Vael said. The word reached TurboTAD thin and flattened.
Finley moved closer to the chart, then stopped himself from touching it.
Glint reached for the covered lantern at his side.
One by one, they entered the slit, carrying no daylight with them.
