WHAT HE COULD NOT MAP 🌿

The collar shivered again. Finley’s flipper remained curled near the hollow, as though the absent plate might return if he gave it room.

Vael touched the bare clay edge. “It did not crumble here.”

“I know.”

This time, the words sounded nothing like refusal.

Two seams continued beyond the exposed row. The upper opening was wide, but loose fibres trembled above it. The lower one pressed close to a living root.

Finley looked between them, then at the chart against his side. His old line favoured the upper seam. His gaze stayed there even as he loosened the roll.

He held it out to Vael.

“You lead.”

Vael did not take it immediately. “You still prefer the upper way.”

“Yes.” Finley swallowed. “And I cannot make a missing answer prove me right.”

Vael accepted the chart and tucked it close. Finley’s empty flipper drifted once after it, then pressed against his side.

“Lower seam,” Vael said.

TurboTAD braced the upper rib while the others eased away from the row. Zale drew the guard weed behind them. Glint left last, keeping their wake from the exposed hollow.

Vael entered the lower seam with the chart beneath one flipper. Finley followed, his empty flipper held close. At the first turn, Vael chose the living groove. Finley glanced towards the upper opening, then went after him.
