Glint’s lantern opened one green eye in the dark. 🏮

A WAKE HELD BACK 🌑
The water lay unnaturally cold and still. TurboTAD’s whisper reached the others flattened and far away.
Glint uncovered his green lantern. Its glow found route plates on a sagging lip, an index strip beneath them and a root-thread torn from a groove in the living wall. One end was trapped under the lip.
Finley leaned nearer. His wake reached the stack. Three plates trembled.
“I didn’t touch them.”
“You brought water,” Glint said. “Water is talented.”
He folded between the others and the plates. Their wakes broke against his back.
“Can I help?” Zale asked.
“Hold the lantern against that root. Do not improve the angle.”
“My gifts are recognised.”
Glint slid a loose root scale beneath the trapped thread. It caught on the cracked lip. Lifting it would lift the records too.
He waited until every wake faded. Then he eased the scale sideways over the crack. The trapped end sprang free, stirring silt through the green light. He pressed both frayed ends into the damp living groove.
Glint did not move. Fine fibres slowly curled across the scale and caught.
Movement entered the slit. The cold loosened. Zale’s next words reached them whole.
Zale returned the lantern. Glint eased the index strip sideways and passed it to Finley. The plates stayed where they belonged.
“You saved what we left,” Vael said.
Glint half-covered the lantern. “It was not ours to break.”
Behind them, moving water passed through the dark archive again.
