VAEL CHECKS THE WATER 🫧
The oldest knotted reeds formed the Outer Crossing Ledger. Fixed ties preserved old bearings; younger tips leaned with the present current. A few tiny snails grazed between old ties, polishing pale windows in the green.
Vael, the Pond’s Cartographer, adjusted one knot as the travellers arrived.
“Vael,” Finley called. “I need the ledger.”
His gaze went first to the rolled chart beneath Finley’s flipper. “You need an answer. The ledger is less obliging.”
Finley introduced the others without ceremony. “They found a road my chart forgot.”
“Point to its bearing,” Vael said to TurboTAD. “Do not look at his page.”
TurboTAD faced back towards the distant lane and showed the road’s straight course as he remembered it. Glint adjusted his aim by a fraction. Zale, unusually, kept still.
Vael compared the bearing with every old ledger strand. None matched. Three younger reeds crossed the direction TurboTAD had shown.
“No old entry follows it,” he said. “Today’s movement crosses it.”
“My inherited copy leaves the same line blank,” Finley replied. “Two records can share a mistake.”
“Or carry different ones.”
Finley’s mouth tightened.
TurboTAD felt Sora’s deadline moving somewhere behind them. “Can you test the difference?”
Vael unhooked a knotted reed length without asking Finley’s permission. “His chart remembers structure. This remembers what the water does now.”
“Together, then?” Finley asked.
“Near each other,” Vael said.
He swam towards the stone lip. Finley followed with his chart still rolled, which was not agreement, but was close enough to begin.
