THE HOLLOW WITH VISITORS 🏮

Glint slept badly the first night.

He woke twice reaching for a barrier that was no longer in front of him. The third time, it was his flipper that hurt. Pip adjusted the support, and Glint lay awake watching the nursery light grow.

By breakfast he wanted no visitors.

By the middle of breakfast he wanted someone to tell him what he was missing.

Mira brought news of a dispute about whose turn it was to choose the racing course. She described every position, including her own, at considerable length.

“And who won?” Glint asked.

“We haven’t raced. We’re still deciding.”

“That sounds familiar.”

She put his lantern beside the hollow after checking where he wanted it. He had asked for the green light while Pip changed the wrapping.

When she left, the quiet became pleasant again.

Finley appeared at the entrance with an empty bowl.

Glint eyed it. “That looks promising.”

“I came to ask what you want in it.”

“Something that doesn’t need two flippers.”

Finley went away and returned with soft food that stayed where it was put.

Glint ate slowly. A short swim to the nursery edge remained beyond him today. He listened for Mira’s race. When the shouting began, he pushed the bowl aside so he could hear.
