THE CHIPPED SEAT 🔑

Finley cleared the last grit from the small channel beneath the doorway. Marno kept the slab caught and blocked against movement while he worked. The key stayed on TurboTAD’s harness.

Outside, Vael watched one channel mouth. Finley watched the other. Fine weed strands showed the opposing pulls easing until neither side drew sharply through the opening. They kept watching through the next stronger pulse.

Marno positioned the lifting pieces. Only then did TurboTAD fit the dark-gold key into the recess.

Blue-violet light traced its open centre. The catch clicked free.

Marno and Nibble raised the slab, with the lifting pieces carrying its weight. Zale brought the first retaining rail round the side.

Its foot touched the stone seat and tipped.

“Down,” Nibble said.

A chip was missing from the seat. The narrow rail could not lie flat. Lowering the slab onto it would push the foot sideways.

They lowered the slab onto its catch. TurboTAD removed the key, and the light faded.

Nibble examined the uneven seat. A flat packing piece could bridge the chip. He marked the rail shorter to make room for it.

The mark crossed the rail just behind its original peg hole.

“That’s the cut,” he said.
