THE PART FINLEY COULDN’T GUESS 🗺️

By the next light, Finley understood why the returning wash had surprised them.

Beyond the mineral teeth, an unseen branch released water after a delay. Its return changed the force at the narrow gaps.

“So we wait until the push stops,” Zale said.

“It can stop before the return arrives.” Finley showed him two rows. “Both quiet. This one stayed quiet. This one didn’t.”

His strip held observations from several days: which branches were drawing, how strongly, how long the still intervals lasted, what followed. Corrections ran between the original marks. He needed the whole spread open to compare one cycle with another.

Vael copied the branch positions and the broad pattern onto his separate strip. The changing intervals were still Finley’s work in progress.

“Could this tell us when a wider route would be safe to open?” TurboTAD asked.

“Eventually. It already tells us when it isn’t.”

Finley sounded proud. He moved the strip where TurboTAD could see the corrected rows.

Beyond the teeth, Glint raised one flipper.

A patch of weed had bent against the flow, then risen. He watched it while the others went still.

Nothing else moved.

Glint left his old watching place. From the next stone he could see behind it as well as ahead. After a moment, he beckoned TurboTAD over.
