ONE STONE LEFT 🪨

The first lift had moved the crossbar less than the width of Finley’s eye. Zale scraped gravel through the space. The pocket behind him began to hiss.

“Down,” Glint called.

TurboTAD and Bront lowered the wood. Zale emerged, blinking at the brighter water. The measuring reed was bent.

Finley took it without comment.

“One stone left,” Zale said. “Bigger. I can roll it if you lift a little farther.”

Finley laid the reed along the stone lip, finding the height they needed. TurboTAD tried his grip. His shoulder trembled.

He moved closer to the pivot, where he could help without carrying so much of the load.

Bront watched him.

“That makes my end heavier.”

“Yes.”

The bug rearranged his legs. TurboTAD had expected an argument. The absence of one did little to make those hooks easier to work beside.

Zale entered the opening again. This time, water tugged at his tail. He reached the last stone and planted both flippers against it.

Above him, the wood rose.

His pocket’s soft wall began peeling away in pale ribbons. Sand passed across the dent, filling it. He glanced towards the turn he must use to get out.

Its edges had blurred.
