NEVER SAY WHATEVER 🪨

Before the light thinned, they settled beneath a root near the approach to Armoured Water.

Finley spread his chart between them. “We explain why the plate matters and offer whatever is fair.”

“Never say whatever.”

Zale’s voice snapped through the water. Finley’s flipper stopped above the chart.

“Bront once asked whether I wanted safe passage across,” Zale said. He pressed both flippers against the stone. “I said yes. The way out was safe. Nothing I said required a safe way back.”

For a moment, the bright explorer was somewhere else—under a burr of roots, listening to a bargain close around him.

“He repeated my answer exactly,” Zale said. “As if that made the empty part my fault.”

TurboTAD wanted to ask how Zale escaped. The way Zale held the stone told him not to.

“What should Finley have said?” he asked instead.

“Nothing yet. Fair to whom? Whatever chosen by whom?” Zale looked at each of them. “Bront lives inside the words you leave empty.”

Glint nodded once. “Unmeasurable words.”

“Dangerous ones,” Zale said. “And he will remember them better than you.”

Vael drew a blade of grass across Finley’s sentence.

Finley did not defend it. “Then what is the first rule?”

Zale swallowed. “Name the whole bargain. If we cannot, we make none.”

The grass blade stayed across whatever. Finley left it there.
