The second record point looked as though the roots had tried to swallow it. 🪵

ONE LINE LEFT TO READ 🧭

At the alder’s far side, a fitted root pocket sagged beneath a mat of old fibres.

Finley reached for the covering.

“Lift that corner and the rest comes with it,” Vael warned.

“Leave it, and we read nothing.”

TurboTAD expected their argument to spark again. Instead, Finley held the loosest fibres still while Vael traced the few that still carried weight.

“Zale,” he said, “your narrowest weave.”

Zale threaded fresh grass through the failing edge. “I generally prefer applause before the difficult part.”

“After,” Glint said. “If applicable.”

The pocket lifted by the width of a seed. Finley eased the covering back.

Inside lay a slim fired-clay index strip, cracked across the middle but still resting in its groove. TurboTAD drew everyone’s loose weed ends close; one careless wake could scatter what remained.

Finley read the upper marks and stopped at the break. “The missing route plate has an entry. The last line is split.”

Vael lowered himself until one eye met the groove. “The pieces shifted. Their order did not.”

Glint braced the lower root. Vael steadied the cracked edge, and Finley nudged the two halves together without lifting either one.

The marks joined.

Finley went utterly still. Even his annoyance disappeared.

“The plate was transferred out of this archive,” he said. “There’s a destination code.”

TurboTAD watched his face. “Can you read it?”

“Yes.” Finley looked toward the darker water beyond the alder. “I only wish it named kinder water.”
