Nobody spoke until Glint’s flipper stopped trembling. 🌿

ANYONE MAY SAY HOLD 🤝
Under the three-pronged alder, the current carried their tired bubbles away.
Zale broke a duckweed leaf into five crooked pieces and offered the largest to Glint without looking at him.
Glint inspected it. “Unequal distribution.”
“You did the most waiting.”
“Waiting uses very little duckweed.”
“Then save it for your next heroic lack of movement.”
Glint took the piece. TurboTAD’s laugh came out tangled with the breath he had been holding since the root ribs.
Glint chewed slowly, as though accepting care required nearly as much thought as surviving danger.
Finley unrolled his chart across a smooth root. The dotted detour reached the alder exactly where the moving weeds had promised. He darkened the line with slow, careful strokes.
“The map was wrong,” he said.
Vael brushed away a leaf crumb. “Old. Not faithless.”
Finley considered that, then kept drawing.
TurboTAD settled beside Glint. “You shouldn’t have to prove you’re frightened before we listen.”
“It was useful fear,” Glint said. His flipper had stopped shaking, but he tucked it beneath himself.
Zale lowered his duckweed. “Next time anyone says hold, we hold. Questions can wait until nothing is hunting us.”
Glint glanced at him. “Unexpectedly sensible.”
“The leaf is improving me.”
A loose stem swung across the narrow opening ahead.
“Hold,” Zale said.
Five swimmers stopped together. Glint had not needed to raise a flipper.
