THE WAY AROUND THE STILLNESS 🌿

Glint pointed toward a crooked chain of root ribs hugging the outer bank. Between them, weed tips moved in steady water.

“That way,” he said. “Cover. Movement.”

Finley pressed the chart against a stone. “It ends at a packed root wall.”

Vael brushed silt from the lowest rib. “The wall has lifted since this was drawn. Water passes underneath.”

Finley looked from the inked wall to the moving weed tips. He left the chart open and followed Vael to the lowest rib.

Zale peered beneath the rib. “I could check the gap.”

Glint blocked him with one quiet look.

“Right,” Zale said. “No cheerful volunteering into a hunter’s view.”

TurboTAD slid beneath the first root and held its hanging weed apart. “Finley, if this wall has lifted, where does the chain meet your route again?”

Finley traced a curve around the chart’s blank edge. “At the far root of the three-pronged alder. If it meets it.”

“Vael?”

He released a thread of grass. It travelled beneath the rib. “The flow is going there.”

Glint added, “And the flow is not holding its breath.”

TurboTAD kept the weed raised. “Then test the space while I hold cover.”

Vael slipped through and signalled clear. Finley drew one dotted curve before rolling the chart.

“A map should admit when it is hoping,” he said.

TurboTAD entered the shadowed gap. One by one, the others followed.
