Under the root fringe, Glint kept watching the empty patch. 🪶

THE LIGHT HE PUT OUT 🏮
Two emptied water-beetle cases clung beneath the same leaf. Nothing around them stirred. Behind Glint, Finley held the rolled chart motionless against his side.
“What makes the longer way safer?” Finley asked.
Glint held his flipper low. “Cover. Moving water. No open approach.”
TurboTAD heard something under Glint’s flat voice. “You’ve seen this before.”
Glint watched the still water. TurboTAD waited beside him without pressing.
“Krail,” he said. “A dragonfly nymph. He hid under weed where the water showed every movement.”
Zale’s grin vanished. Vael lowered beside the nearest root.
Glint touched his dark lantern. “Mine was lit. I put it out and stopped swimming.”
“For how long?” Zale asked.
“Long enough for silt to settle on my face.”
TurboTAD imagined Glint alone inside that silence, refusing even the smallest frightened kick. “And Krail left?”
“Eventually.” Glint’s flipper tightened on the lantern strap. “I did not check where.”
Finley looked from the chart to the exposed water. “Are you saying Krail is here?”
“No. I am saying something hunts this way. I will not turn fear into evidence.”
That sounded like Glint, but the effort behind it did not.
TurboTAD stayed close beneath the root. “Then tell us what kept you alive. We build the detour from that.”
Glint studied the broken roots along the rim. Now everyone waited for his decision.
