Glint stopped the whole group with one quiet word. ✋

THE EMPTY PATCH 🫧
The open reach looked harmless. Daylight lay across clean silt, and the ordinary current lifted reed tips on both sides.
Then Glint blocked Finley’s rolled chart with one flipper.
“Back.”
Zale checked himself so sharply that his tail stirred a small cloud. Finley stopped at the edge. “The crossing is clear.”
“No,” Glint said. “It is empty.”
Near the first weed clump lay a caddis larva’s pebble case, split down the middle. A straight groove cut through the silt toward it. The groove’s edges were sharp. Grains were still settling.
Water fleas crowded the moving water on either side. None entered the open patch.
Zale’s usual grin did not come. “Fresh?”
Glint kept his lantern covered. “Very.”
Vael studied the long way around the root fringe. “A detour costs daylight.”
“If I am wrong,” Glint said.
“And if you are right?” TurboTAD asked.
Glint did not answer. His flippers had drawn close to his body, and his eyes never left the weed clump. TurboTAD had seen Glint face broken roots and failing water without that stillness.
He wanted to ask what Glint knew. Open water was the wrong place to demand it.
TurboTAD backed beneath the root fringe. “The direct crossing is finished.”
Finley’s chart tightened in its curl. Zale moved under cover without a joke. Vael followed, still watching the distant alder.
Across the reach, the three-pronged roots stood exactly where the map promised.
This time, that was not enough.
