BEYOND THE PALE RISE 🗺️

They crossed beneath wavering stems with the sealed entrance behind them. Finley held the rescued index strip while Vael carried his chart. Neither spoke until the pale rise lifted beneath their flippers.

There, clean daylight reached the marks.

Finley laid the strip across the chart. Its filing cuts met an old bend exactly.

“An outer record nook,” he said. “Below the lower fork of a three-pronged alder.”

Across the open reach, three roots rose from a distant bank.

Vael watched their fine hairs rather than the drawing. “Lower when the record was filed. The left fork hangs still now. The right carries movement beneath it.”

“The chart locates the alder,” Finley said.

“And the living root chooses the useful fork.”

The old irritation returned to Finley’s face. TurboTAD was almost relieved to see it.

Zale peered between them. “You could divide the misery.”

Finley tapped the old bend. “I brought us to the rise.”

Vael pointed across the reach. “I take us under the moving fork.”

“Acceptable.”

“Nearly friendly,” Zale whispered.

“Do not damage the moment,” Finley said.

Vael returned the chart. Finley rolled it close, but kept the index strip separate and sheltered beneath its edge.

TurboTAD faced the alder. Between the pale rise and those three roots lay an open patch of clean silt, bright enough to look harmless.

Glint’s gaze fixed on it.
