The right row was found; reaching it was another matter. 🌿

THE BURIED ROW 🪵

Its low end lay pinned beneath an old rib. The other sagged towards a split living fibre, with softened leaves packed between them like wet scales.

Vael traced the strain without touching it. “Lift the pinned end first. Pull the loose side and the order folds.”

Finley memorised the overlaps, then rolled his chart. “Glint, guard the leaves. Zale, take the outer lip.”

“Which leaves?” Zale asked. “There are enough to embarrass a forest.”

“The ones Glint refuses to let you touch.”

“Clear.”

TurboTAD pressed both flippers beneath the upper rib. At Finley’s signal, Vael eased the living fibre sideways. Glint flattened against the row, catching every stray wake across his back. Zale lifted the lip by the width of a seed.

Nothing moved.

Then the first buried edge slid free.

The seasoned reeds creaked beyond the seam. TurboTAD felt the sound travel into the rib above him. His flippers began to shake.

“Hold,” he said.

They froze until the trembling passed.

Finley worked sideways, freeing one softened border at a time without lifting a single leaf from its place. Silt clouded his face. Vael cleared it with slow strokes aimed away from the records.

At last the whole low run showed beneath the rib—broken fitted edges, still arranged around whatever the archive had once held.

Finley hovered before it. “One chance,” he said. “We read it before this support shifts again.”
