THE WALL THEY CHOSE 🌿
Beyond the preserved leaves, a fitted clay-plate layer quivered whenever the side channel flexed. Root dust lifted around it.
Vael braced against the wall. “It is leaning on the records.”
Finley stared into the channel. “It may reach the lower shelves.”
“And it may bring them down.”
TurboTAD looked at the two seasoned reeds and braided collar. They could support the layer or preserve the passage. They could not do both.
Finley’s chart knocked against his side. “Maps are supposed to keep ways open.”
Glint watched the sagging root. “Records are supposed to remain records.”
Zale gave him a sideways look. “Was that comfort?”
“It was accuracy.”
The wall creaked. TurboTAD wanted to choose before the root chose for them, but this loss was not his to measure.
“If we close it,” he asked Finley, “what do we lose?”
“A possible way deeper.” Finley swallowed. “If we leave it, perhaps everything.”
Vael touched the collar’s inner slack. “Your call, Mapmaker.”
For a moment, Finley did not take it. Then he folded his chart over the uncertain passage.
“Close it.”
They angled the reeds’ free ends across the side channel without shifting the outer braces. Zale held them while Vael drew the remaining slack firm and Glint listened for every change.
The opening narrowed, folded and settled into a wall.
Finley touched the bent corner of his chart. Nobody tried to improve the silence.
Behind the new wall, the surviving record layer stopped trembling.
