ONE OPENING 🪵

Vael guided the lower end beneath a crossing root. Finley checked the pale record edge behind it, then shifted the reed by the width of a seed.

“There,” he said.

“There,” Vael agreed.

That was all the arguing the archive allowed.

TurboTAD and Zale carried the second reed into place while Glint steadied its end. A soft scrape travelled through the folded root. Everyone froze. The bowed rib held.

Zale fed Nibble’s collar around both supports and the living load root. “I am wearing it only in spirit.”

Glint caught the loose braid before it drifted across Zale’s face. “A demanding garment.”

They pulled together. The collar widened under the strain, sharing the weight without biting into the living fibre. TurboTAD felt both reeds settle against his flippers.

“Enough,” Finley and Vael said at once.

Neither smiled.

TurboTAD eased the right seam apart. Cool, silt-scented water touched his face. Beyond it waited narrow darkness crossed by pale leaf edges.

He released the root.

The opening stayed.

Vael slipped through first and tested the living fibres inside. Finley followed, close enough to guard the order he could not yet see. TurboTAD sent Glint and Zale after them, then looked once at the two reeds carrying all the help home could spare.

He entered. Behind him, the braided collar drew tight and held.
