WHAT HOME COULD SPARE 🪵

At the high roots, Marno set the last crosspiece into the nursery’s second passage. Nibble arrived wearing the braided collar.

“That is not where it goes,” Marno said.

“I was checking flexibility.”

Sora placed Mira where the fine root fringe was easiest to see. “If anything catches, call stop.”

“Even if Marno says keep going?”

Marno looked wounded. “Especially then.”

Brink led four older Little TADs towards the opening. Pondling curled a small tail over the testing leaf, then released it at Mira’s tap.

The leaf swept around the bend. One fringe strand folded behind a tie.

“Stop!”

Everyone froze. Marno had barely opened the screen, but he released it without argument. Nibble slipped the caught strand free and moved the tie higher. The passage relaxed; the leaf bobbed through.

Sora looked from Mira to Brink. “She calls every crossing. You stand beside her.”

Mira swallowed, then nodded. Pondling nosed the leaf back towards its starting root.

Across the work pocket, only two seasoned reeds remained on the storage rack. Sora set Nibble’s collar between them.

“Those go outward,” she decided. “Marno and Nibble stay.”

Marno’s answer was slow. “If the archive braces bend, they must close the opening.”

“Tell them,” Sora said. “No more seasoned reeds can leave until fresh ones harden.”

One traveller sped ahead with the warning. Two others took a reed each, the collar loose between them. The rack stood bare as they departed through the upper weeds.

Behind them, Mira called the next crossing open.
