He tied three weed loops through the high roots, then asked Finley to follow them outward.

The first two were easy. At the third fork, the loop could be seen from both channels and pointed nowhere.

Finley stopped. “A return mark?”

“A bad one,” Zale said. “I wanted you to find it before we needed it.”

TurboTAD was ready to tell him not to waste time. He closed his mouth.

Zale untied the loop and fastened it twice around the homeward root, leaving the outward root bare. Then he swam beyond the fork, turned and approached from the unfamiliar side.

“Double loop means home,” he said. “It does not care which way I thought I was facing.”

Glint examined the knot. “Better.”

“I shall treasure this celebration.”

TurboTAD moved beside him. “You wanted the bolder route yesterday.”

“I still do.” Zale gave the double loop a small tug. “That is why I should test the way back. I can make a wrong turn sound excellent, even to myself.”

The humour faded before the truth beneath it did.

“I won’t spend this journey being sorry for the last shortcut,” Zale continued. “Give me every route assumption. I’ll break it while that is still useful.”

TurboTAD did not offer easy forgiveness. Zale had asked for responsibility.

“Return marks and route tests,” he said. “Yours.”

Sora watched Zale swim the practice fork once more. This time he came back without hesitation.

She pulled the useless loop free. The double one stayed.
