FEAR GETS A PLACE 🫧

Marno and Nibble were shaping the second passage when TurboTAD reached the high roots with Glint, Zale and Finley. Sora listened to their account without interrupting, one flipper resting against a brace that was damp with cut reed.

“You mean to go beyond the familiar water,” she said.

“When Finley finds the right record.” TurboTAD tried to keep his voice steady. “We need to learn which old route failed.”

Sora watched him for a moment too long.

The words he had avoided rose anyway. “I’m afraid I’ll be away when home needs me again.”

There. The fear sounded smaller aloud, but it did not feel smaller.

Sora offered no promise she could not keep. She looked through the unfinished doorway—the one home had begun building without him.

“Then you leave after this holds a full crossing,” she said. “Every unfamiliar fork must read homeward, not only make sense on the way out.”

Zale’s gaze dropped to the weed strands beside Nibble.

“And time?” TurboTAD asked.

Sora pointed to a bright bar sliding down the highest root. “Send word before that light leaves the second root tomorrow. If you miss it, I close the outer passage. No one follows you blind.”

TurboTAD wanted to ask her to come looking anyway. He pressed a flipper to the new brace and felt Marno’s work holding beneath it.

“You decide what home can risk,” he said.

“And you decide what the journey can risk.” Sora’s voice softened. “Neither of us gets everything.”

“Agreed.”
