THE ROOTS ABOVE THE RIVER šæ
The river surged towards the ledge.
āBack from the edge. Marno, where will it hold? Nibble, whereās the flow going?ā
Marno pressed a flipper to the nearest arch. āHere. The ledge beside it wonāt.ā
Nibbleās detector flickered wildly. āItās following the violet lights. Somethingās guiding it.ā
Water struck. TurboTAD fired a short green burst towards the arch. Marno braced against the stone, and Nibble tucked behind them while bubbles tore past.
Below, the lights raced through the drowned pillars.
āWe can follow from the sheltered water,ā TurboTAD said.
They moved until the darkness opened into an enormous freshwater basin. Roots descended through blue-green light, their pale algae above long grass and drifting silt.
The river entered through Builder arches. One current continued towards the roots; the others dragged sideways into a deep cut across the floor.
Nibble lowered his detector.
āTurboTAD⦠it isnāt stealing from the nursery.ā
āWhat is it doing?ā
āTrying to reach it.ā
Marno descended beside the cut and brushed away silt. āForced inward. Like the conduit.ā
The key warmed sharply in TurboTADās flipper. Violet lights spiralled down, and Nibbleās detector began to chimeāonce, twice, then too many times to count.
āSignals,ā Nibble whispered. āA lot of them.ā
Fresh cracks spread through the stone.
āIf that cut widens,ā Marno said, looking up, ānone of the river will reach the nursery.ā
āThen we find whatās widening it.ā
A huge shadow passed beneath the basin. Silt lifted, grass flattened, and every violet light turned with it.
