THE BOOK OF TAD

THE MEMORY BENEATH THE HATCH 🔒
TurboTAD stared at the sealed hatch while “You came back” faded through the spillway.
Water still crossed the broken crown and disappeared beneath the stone.
Marno lowered himself beside the rim. “No hinges. Nothing to lift it by. They meant this to stay shut.”
Nibble lowered his detector. It clicked twice; a third pulse answered from below.
Blue-violet light threaded through the key’s engravings as TurboTAD tightened his grip.
“Don’t open anything yet.”
“Something down there just matched my signal,” Nibble said.
Marno brushed silt from a ring of tiny marks. Among them was a shape like TurboTAD’s booster.
“That wasn’t on the map,” TurboTAD said.
“It isn’t a Builder route mark either.”
The water crossing the floor thinned. Stone groaned far above.
“The nursery.” TurboTAD looked up.
Nibble checked his detector. “Pressure’s shifting again.”
Water began circling the hatch. As TurboTAD moved the key closer, three sockets opened around the rim, each shaped for one of its points but too far apart to receive them together.
Marno leaned closer. “That’s not a lock.”
“A reader,” Nibble said, his goggles catching the light.
A faint glow formed around the key’s open ring. Above the hatch, a picture flickered: a purple shape travelling through an ancient channel, silver on its back and green light trailing behind.
TurboTAD froze.
“That looks like—” Marno whispered.
“I know.”
The picture vanished before the face became clear. TurboTAD drew the key back; the circling water stopped.
Nibble raised his detector. “The signal wasn’t stored in your key.”
“Where, then?”
Nibble pointed at the hatch.
A heavy knock sounded beneath it. The broken crown dimmed, and three joined circles appeared around the rim: one above, one at their level, one far below.
“The spillway connects all three,” Marno said, his expression hardening.
TurboTAD watched nursery water slip beneath the hatch. “Keeping the diversion open may feed whatever is below.”
“And closing it?” Nibble asked.
“The third pool starts dying again.”
A vibration rolled through the gallery. The hatch sank a flipper’s width, releasing cold blue light around its rim.
TurboTAD moved in front of the others. “Back.”
The gap widened. Beyond it, no creature waited—only an ancient stair spiralling down through rushing water.
The first step bore a carving of the key. Beneath it, Marno read the glowing words aloud.
“THE BEARER RETURNS BELOW.”
TurboTAD looked at the key he had only just found, then into the descending dark.
Something had been waiting for a bearer long before he ever reached the gate.
