THE MISSING SEQUENCE 🗺️

The travelling copy unrolled cleanly beneath Finley’s flipper.

Its route lines remained. At home, the full chart and the original plate were safe. Vael’s partial notes lay beside the copy, showing the branches they had watched and several early readings.

Finley could remember the false quiet before the long return. He could still point out the passages that had pulled against one another. The discovery had not vanished from his mind with the strip.

But which interval had he corrected on the second day? How strong had the upper branch been during the longest pause?

He started a mark, then stopped.

“I can’t trust that number.”

Vael studied the space he had left.

“Can we still take the outward route beyond the teeth?”

“Not as we planned. We needed several complete cycles to choose the opening. These are pieces of them.”

And Krail now hunted where the rest would have to be measured.

Finley crossed out the proposed outward passage on the travelling copy. He did it firmly, without making the line neat.

TurboTAD saw it from beside Glint.

“We leave that route closed.”

Finley nodded. Knowing enough to refuse it did not feel like having enough.

Vael set a blank strip beside the surviving notes. Finley left it untouched and went to wash the grit from Glint’s empty bowl.
