THE SOUND OF A NAME 🫧
The next morning, Vael asked to carry one of Finley’s spare strips.
“Why?”
“I’d like to keep my own observations.”
Finley handed him a blank length, then a second.
“For mistakes?” Vael asked.
“For room.”
Ahead, Zale and TurboTAD were trying to persuade a food bundle through an opening. Zale claimed it had grown in the night.
“You packed it,” TurboTAD said.
“I was optimistic.”
Finley smiled. Vael did not move to join them.
“You keep calling my name when you need something measured,” he said.
“You’re good at it.”
“I know. You can call me for other things.”
Finley rolled the remaining strips more tightly than they needed. Ahead, Zale announced that the opening had probably shrunk.
“Vael,” Finley said, “would you like to hear him explain that to Nibble?”
Vael’s mouth twitched. “Very much.”
They caught up together. Vael held the bundle while Finley unfastened its outer wrap. Zale insisted he had been about to suggest precisely that.
TurboTAD divided the food into two smaller loads and gave one back to him.
At the next bend, Finley called Vael again. A tiny snail was riding a loose leaf upside down, apparently satisfied with its arrangements.
Vael stayed to watch it pass.
